‘Ichikawa’s An Actor’s Revenge: subjectivity or assemblage?’ (2005)

In his second book on the cinema, Deleuze concentrates upon exploring modernist film. This taxonomy, far from being over-determined, is constructed in order to confront other critical and theoretical approaches to film. Of these, one of the most fascinating is the ‘mirror-image’. Though not explicitly stated, with the mirror-image Deleuze is confronting the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan, confronting the Lacanian concepts of the imaginary and the real with his own concepts of the actual and the virtual.

‘Globalisation and Cinema: Miike Takashi, Japanese film and the Question of a Universal Subjectivity’ (2004)

This paper begins by examining the CGI cock-fighting scene from Miike Takashi’s The City of Lost Souls (2000), which mimics ‘bullet-time’ – the technology most easily associated with the Matrix trilogy. This scene raises a specific question regarding the connection between Japanese and North American cinema. Why, for instance, spend such a large amount of the film’s limited budget on a sequence that is seemingly incidental to the narrative trajectory? Is this parody?
