Thank you to Prof. Dr. Kim Hyung Rae for translating my book Deleuze’s Cinema Books: Three Introductions to the Taxonomy of Images into Korean, which has just gone into its second edition.

I published Deleuze’s Cinema Books back in 2016 with Edinburgh University Press. Soon after Hyung Rae was in Canada:

“I stumbled across your book in 2017 at the University of Toronto library… At the time, I was studying Deleuze’s cinema books… I was very pleased and thought I should introduce your book to Korean researchers by immediately translating it into Korean. So, in 2019, I translated and published your book. This book is a republished version of the first translation.”

The second edition is out now with Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Just like the English edition, it has three overviews of the film philosophy of Gilles Deleuze in Cinema 1 – The Movement-Image and Cinema 2 – The Time-Image. The philosophical background to the books, a series of chapters on each and every sign in Deleuze’s cinema theory, plus 44 short chapters exploring each of those signs through a film.

The films explored in the book all come from the last 30 or so years, and are from all across the world. My South Korean film choice? Mother (2009) from Bong Joon-ho, who later went on to direct the first South Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival with Parasite (2019).
